The 37th NAACP Image Awards Takes Place with Superstar Cuba Gooding Jr. As Host
Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx won the 37th NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Musical Artist during the taping of the 37th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, February 25 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The show aired Friday, March 3 at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Fox Television. “The Bernie Mac Show” took top honors in three categories: Mac was picked as Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, co-star Camille Winbush won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Millicent Shelton was chosen for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.
The show based on the life of Chris Rock, “Everybody Hates Chris,” won as best television series. The top movie award went to “Crash,” a film about racial tensions in Los Angeles. Alicia Keys, who tied with Mariah Carey with four Image Awards nominations, won three awards: Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Song and Outstanding Music Video for “Unbreakable.” Carey won the Outstanding Album award for “The Emancipation of Mimi.” The Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture award went to Samuel L. Jackson for "Coach Carter." Kimberly Elise won the Outstanding Actress award in a Motion Picture for "Diary of a Mad Black Woman."
The 37th NAACP Image Awards was hosted by Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. The star studded event featured presenters and performers including Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks, Chris Brown, Vin Diesel, Omar Gooding, Randy Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson, Star Jones Reynolds and Kerry Washington.
Legendary musician Carlos Santana received the NAACP Hall of Fame Award, the Neville Brothers received the NAACP Chairman's Award and Susan L. Taylor was honored with the NAACP President's Award.
From the entries received, a special committee of 300 industry professionals and NAACP leaders from across the country selected five nominees in each of the categories. Any artist, manager, publicist, production company, record label, studio, network or publishing house can submit an entry to the NAACP Image Awards. The final selections were voted on by NAACP members.
