Nominations Announced for 32nd Annual Annie Awards Honoring Animation Excellence
Pixar's 'The Incredibles' Leads Feature Nominations With 16;
Winners Announced at January 30 Awards Ceremony Hosted by Tom Kenny
Burbank, CA -- ASIFA-Hollywood, the International Animated Film Society, announced nominations today for the 32nd Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year's finest achievement in animation across film, television, commercials and short subjects. Seen as a precursor to the Oscar for animation, the Annie's are the industry's oldest and most prestigious awards. This year's nominations reflect the complexity and popularity of animation today, from the highflying "The Incredibles" to the undersea adventures of "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" and "Shark Tale."
Pixar Animation Studios (Walt Disney Pictures) led the field with 16 nominations for "The Incredibles," including Best Animated Feature as well as individual nominations for Character Design, Animated Effects, Character Animation, Directing, Music, Production Design, Storyboarding, Voice Acting (Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best/Frozone and Brad Bird as Edna Mode) and Writing.
DreamWorks Animation garnered 14 nominations overall for "Shrek 2" and "Shark Tale," each with seven. "Shrek 2" captured nominations for Best Animated Feature, Animated Effects, Directing, Music, Storyboarding, Voice Acting (Antonio Banderas for Puss in Boots), and Writing. "Shark Tale" received its nominations for Animated Effects, Character Animation, Character Design, Production Design (three nominations) and Writing.
Rounding out the nominations for top animated feature are "Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence" from Go Fish Pictures (DreamWorks Animation) and "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" from Peanut Worm Productions (Paramount Pictures).
For television, children's favorite "SpongeBob SquarePants" shares the spotlight with its feature production counterpart having picked up a nomination for Best Animated Television Production. Other nominations in this category include "My Life As A Teenage Robot" from Frederator/Nickelodeon, "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" from Cartoon Network Studios, and "The Batman" from Warner Bros. Animation.

The Annie Awards honor overall excellence as well as individual achievement in a total of 21 categories in areas ranging from production design, character animation, and effects animation to storyboarding, writing, music and voice acting. Entries submitted for consideration must be from productions that originally aired, were exhibited in an animation festival or commercially released between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2004.
Annie trophies in the form of replica zoetropes will be presented at a black-tie awards ceremony on Sunday, January 30, 2005 at the historic Alex Theatre (216 N. Brand Blvd.) in Glendale, CA. This year's ceremony promises to be fun and irreverent hosted by Annie-nominated comic actor Tom Kenny, best known as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants. He will be joined on stage by a range of animation industry insiders and celebrity presenters. A pre- reception begins at 3:00 pm with the awards ceremony following at 5 pm. A post-show celebration immediately follows at Milano's Cucina Italiana (525 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA), 2 blocks north of the Alex Theatre.
More than 1,000 entertainment industry insiders attend the annual Annie Awards. Tickets are available to the general public space permitting. Special juried awards honoring lifetime achievement and exceptional contributions to the art of animation will also be awarded at the 32nd Annual Annie Awards ceremony:
Winsor McCay Award Recipients (lifetime achievement)
Don Bluth -- One of the modern icons of animation, Bluth gained world- wide recognition for a prolific and versatile career at Disney, 20th Century Fox, and as an independent.
Virginia Davis -- The original model for Alice in Wonderland earning her the distinction as Disney Studios' first star and now oldest surviving employee.
Arnold Stang -- Beloved fixture in comic TV series of the '50s and '60s with numerous voice acting credits who is still at work today.

Founded in 1972 by ASIFA member and veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards have grown in scope and stature for the past three decades. Today, ASIFA-Hollywood -- the largest of an international network of chapters -- supports a range of animation activities and preservation efforts through its membership. Current initiatives include special animation event, classes and screenings, film and video archives and film preservation efforts.
ASIFA is the French acronym for "Association Internationale du FilmD'Animation," an organization founded in 1957 in France by a group of professional animators and chartered by UNESCO in 1960 to encourage the art of animation and further international understanding and goodwill through the animation medium.
