'Slamdance on Stage' Kicks off Second Season Highlighting Contest Winners
Slamdance On Stage returns with the top finalists from the Slamdance Screenplay and Teleplay Competitions. The series, sponsored by the Writers Guild of America, west, and fox21, will continue every Monday night for the next twelve weeks at different theatres throughout Los Angeles until May 23, 2005. The staged reading series begins Monday night, March 7, with a reading of Gary Kanew and Claudia Myers’ 2nd place screenplay, “Wild Oats” to star Joanne Worley (Laugh-In), Barbara Bain (Mission Impossible) and Len Lesser (Uncle Leo from Seinfeld) at the Coronet Studio Theatre.
This year’s staged reading series follows in tradition the acclaimed Slamdance On Stage 2004. The reading of Miranda Kwok’s first place screenplay “Song of Silence” at the Los Angeles Film School featured Noah Wiley and Linda Cardinelli, and drew an audience of over 300 people.
“The Slamdance Screenplay and Teleplay Competitions are discovery grounds for emerging writers; Slamdance On Stage is the perfect place to meet these writers and listen to their work,” says competition director John Stoddard.
The competitions received a combined total of over 2,500 submissions in 2004. The scripts were judged by numerous tiered-panels of screenwriters, filmmakers and industry professionals. Recent discoveries of the competition have included the winning scripts The Woodsman (’01, Nicole Kassell & Steven Fechter), and Maria Full of Grace (’01, Joshua Marston).
