Thank you very much. This is the first time in the Oscar -- I am a little bit nervous. First of all, I have to thanks for my parents because they are not there. I hope that they can listen to me somewhere here because they are already gone. And I want to thank my family to support what I am working on and especially, thanks for Ang Lee.

Speech
Thank you, Academy. Thank you, Dreamworks. Thank you Walter Parkes, Branko Lustig, Terry Needham, a huge thank you to Ridley Scott for his vision and his incredible inspiration. But this doesn't belong to me alone. It belongs to a huge costume crew who worked so hard in Malta and Morocco and in the U.K. It belongs to the armor makers, it belongs to the costume makers, to the jewelry footwear creators, and the costume breakers. I couldn't have done it without these people, without Vanessa Jones, without my husband, Tony Dixon, without Jake Scott, and I couldn't have done it without Rosemary Burrows, Annie Hadly, and Sammy Howarth. Thank you.

Winner - Sound Editing

U-571

Jon Johnson

Speech
Oh, wait. Clock's ticking, got this going. All right. First off, my thanks to the producers of U-571, Dino and Martha de Laurentiis, who make it exciting and an honor to be in this business. For the director, Jonathan Mostow, thank you for your loyalty, talent, and tenacity. For my whole crew, my deepest thanks. I would like to mention a few of them that I've tortured the longest, Miguel Rivera, Keith Bilderbeck, Val Kuklowsky, Bruce Stubblefield, Robert Troy, to the mixers Rick, Steve, Gregg, Ivan, you guys set the bar for the best mix i've ever been through. To my partner, chief antagonist, fiercest promoter, most loyal friend and my wife Jill. I love you forever and after. Kids, don't stay up tonight. We'll be out real late.

SPECIAL THANKS
If this is being read, then it is my great great honor to thank the following for their truly outstanding contributions for the sound of U-571.

Dino and Martha De Laurentiis are my ideal of film producing. Every film I've worked on for them has been a true pleasure and an education to what class and grace really is.

I cannot thank Jonathan Mostow enough for his tenacity and loyalty. With his support and critical ear, we moved mountains.

Wayne Wahrman, thank you for the perfect tempo to work with. I appreciate every cut you made. Teresa Kelly, what a battle you had and you made it all work so well. Deepest thanks to Gordon Antell.

To the best, smartest, funniest collection of sound editors, my deep thanks and appreciation: Miguel Rivera, the "Luca Brasi" of recording, muchas gracias, mi amigo. Keith Bilderbeck, the man behind the curtain whose talent I admire greatly. Angelo Palazzo, the resident Bauhaus artist with the talent of Loud. Tim Geddemer, no one could get it as wet as you. Charles Maynes, thanks for getting in at the right time with the right stuff. Guy Tsujimoto, thank you for taking the night shift and making an excellent contribution. Sandy Gendler, thanks for your unmatched talent. Robert "Center Track" Troy, the only dialogue editor I rely on to continually create the "silk purse." Bruce Stubblefield, thank you for always being able to be the guy to get it done and done well, and always take the opposing view. Val Kuklowsky a.k.a. "K.G.B.", no one can get a performance out of an actor like you. Michelle Perrone, thank you for taming the sync. Petra Bach, besides the great editing, we love your fresh eggs.

And the assistants. Every thanks I could give you times a gazillion: C.J. Hinkleman, as the first assistant, you made sense of nonsense and order out of chaos. Brian Jennings, thank you for staying awake and making what didn't work before, work now. Tanya Yarborough, keeping track of Val is a full time job and you made it look easy.

To the A.D.R. stage north of the border, Pinewood Studio in Vancouver, my thanks: David Horner, your miking is impeccable and made the material seamless. Scott Schmidt, thanks for bringing all in alive.

To the best sounding Foley artists and recordists I've ever had the luck to be associated with, everlasting thanks: Ed Steidele, whose talent is only exceeded by his good nature; Jerry Trent, what a hoofer and a great talent; Chris Trent and Sean Keegan, great stuff, boys; Gary Coppola, what a long road we've had and we only dunked one mike.

On the set: Ivan Sharrock, you suffered tortures of the damned to get these dialogue tracks and you saved scene after scene. My gratitude for your talent and your crew's tenacity. Thank God we have the Nagra D!

The Boys at the Console: Gregg Landaker, Steve Maslow, Rick Kline - WHAT AWESOME TALENT! Thank you for making me look like I knew what I was doing and setting the bar for everyone else. I don?t care what the vote is, you boys created the Best Sounding Movie of the year.

The Boys in the Backroom: Brian Picassi and Frank Fleming, you guys are the best.

Universal Sound: Thank you for being the best, Bill Varney, George Borghi, and the great staff.

My personal thanks to my wife, business partner, chief antagonist, main promoter, and most loyal friend, Jill. Words aren't enough to start to convey all I owe you. You have my heart today, tomorrow, forever, and after. My son, Devin, and my daughter, Caitlin, as swell as this award is, you two are the biggest pride in my life. To Claudia Nova, you are the gift from Brazil that keeps this family unit together when my hours are insane.

And to all my family in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska and California:
YeeeeeeeeeeHHHaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again, my thanks and love to you all,
Jon Johnson
