SHOWTIME INDEPENDENT FILMS SCREENS BEREFT AT AFI FEST NOV. 13TH, 2004 IN LOS ANGELES
HOLLYWOOD, CA --- After moving audiences at Tribeca Film Festival in New York and at Seattle Film Festivals earlier this year, Showtime Independent Films brings BEREFT to The Arclight in Hollywood for a very special screening on Saturday, November 13th, 2004 at 7:15 p.m. A14 at the AFI Fest. BEREFT, a dramatic feature is a Red House Films Production is written by Peter Ferland and benchmarks the directorial debut of actor Tim Daly who co-directs with Clark Mathis. The film is executive produced by David Peters and Jerry Offsay.
BEREFT traces the story of a young Vermont woman who is grappling with the sudden loss of her husband and a world spinning out of control, while treading emotional waters, as she tries to maintain the façade of a healthy, balanced normal life. The film stars Vinessa Shaw (“Eyes Wide Shut,” The Weight of Water,” “40 Days and 40 Nights”), Tim Blake Nelson (“Wonderland,” “Holes,” Scooby Doo 2”), veteran actor Edward Herrmann (“Nixon,” “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” “Intolerable Cruelty”,) Academy® Award-nominee and Golden Globe® Award winner Marsha Mason (“The Goodbye Girl,” “Chapter Two,” “Only When I Laugh”)
and Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under,” “Paycheck”).
Daly, who additionally wears a producer hat on this film with Steve Burleigh, in addition to directing with Mathis, is best known for his work as multi-hyphenate film, and award-winning TV and stage actor. His
diverse film work includes “Diner,” “The Object of My Affection,” “The Associate,” “Basic,” and Cannes Film
Festival’s Camera D’or winning “Denise Calls Up,” with recent roles in “Against the Ropes” with Meg Ryan and
in “The Sopranos.” TV honors comprise, winner of the Golden Satellite Award and TV Guide and SAG Award
nominee for his work in the CBS series “The Fugitive”. Daly starred in the critically acclaimed David Chase
series “Almost Grown”, the Emmy Award winning mini series “From the Earth to the Moon”, “Queen”, and
“Storm of the Century”.
Director CLARK MATHIS has been a professional cinematographer for fourteen years. He was nominated for a 2002 A.S.C. award for his work on “Birds of Prey”, the tale of Batman and Cat Woman’s illegitimate daughter. Transitioning an editing career from ABC news to cinematography, he has since photographed both studio and independent features, recently completing “The Perfect Score” for Paramount. He has collaborated with directors Chris Eyre on “Edge of America,” Mikael Salomon on CBS’ “The Fugitive” and is slated to shoot Don Roos’ upcoming feature, “Happy Endings”.
In December of 2003, THE Independent Film world was presented with the benchmark announcement that Showtime Networks (following in the footsteps of fellow cabler HBO) had launched its premiere Showtime Independente Films banner and would be financing low-budget $1 Million Dollar Indie films working with established specialty producers and directors to fully-finance and produce six to eight low budget films targeted for theatrical premiere.
Showtime started 2004 off with three of its productions accepted into the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and continues to produce works with established specialty producers and directors. In the past, a number of films co-developed, co-produced and/or co-financed by the network have been successful in gaining theatrical release prior
to their SHOWTIME premiere, most notably THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, Maya Angelou's directorial debut DOWN IN THE DELTA and the Oscar winning film GODS & MONSTERS. Other SHOWTIME films such as INSIDE, BLIND FAITH and LOSING CHASE, to name a few, have received theatrical distribution after their SHOWTIME premieres.
