IRISH FILM AND TELEVISON AWARDS
People’s Choice Awards: AVICA Best International Actor Award
EMBARGOED: 21ST SEPTEMBER 2005





The Irish Film and Television Awards 2005 today announced the four nominees for the “Avica Best International Actor Award”, one of the People's Choice Categories that will be voted for by the general public.

The Avica Best International Actor Award gives the Irish Public a chance to celebrate the outstanding male talent in the film industry today, by voting for their favourite performance by an International Actor in 2005. This year's winner will be announced at the awards ceremony, which takes place on the 05th November 2005.

The Irish public will be able to vote for their favourite international actor from the following nominations:

Christian Bale (Batman Begins)
Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
Brad Pitt (Mr. & Mrs Smith)
Mickey Rourke (Sin City)

Following on from the success of the Awards in 2004, this year's Awards ceremony promises to be a highly prestigious and glamorous event with a host of film stars, TV personalities, directors, producers and distinguished guests in attendance to celebrate the undisputed talent that exists within the film and television industries in Ireland and around the globe. The ceremony will be broadcast live by RTÉ One on November 5th 2005.

The Nominated Actors

CHRISTIAN BALE

Christian Bale’s career spans a unique variety and range. He made his film debut in Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic ,Empire of the Sun before continuing to garner praise for his memorable roles in The Portrait of a Lady and Velvet Goldmine. Critics were unanimous in their acclaim for his gruesomely comic turn in the controversial American Psycho before he moved to star in Shaft, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Reign of Fire and Laurel Canyon. Following his starring role in Batman Begins, Bale will next portray English tobacco planter John Rolfe in The New World.

JOHNNY DEPP
Johnny Depp’s big-screen debut came in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street but it was his compelling performance in Edward Scissorhands that established Depp as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents. Depp’s other screen credits include Cry Baby, Donnie Brasco, Sleepy Hollow , Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Finding Neverland, for which he received an Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe nomination in 2005. He is currently filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean 3, and will next star in Libertine.

BRAD PITT
Following roles in Troy and Ocean’s Twelve in 2004, Brad Pitt appeared on our screens in 2005 opposite Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt’s role in Thelma & Louise first brought him national attention, where after he starred in Neil Jordan’s Interview with a Vampire before being nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award for Legends of the Fall and Twelve Monkeys. Pitt’s list of starring roles includes Snatch, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Sleepers, The Devil’s Own and Fight Club. He next stars in the drama Babel, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

MICKEY ROURKE
Mickey Rourke, a graduate of New York’s Actor’s Studio, is this generations’ classic working actor. Rourke burst onto movie screens with two attention-grabbing performances: that of ruthless arsonist in Body Heat and the hapless hairdresser in Diner. Promoted to stardom in The Pope of Greenwich Village and Year of the Dragon, Rourke’s other career performances include 9 1/2 Weeks, Barfly, Angel Heart, Spun and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He most recently co-starred in Man on Fire, while he will next star in Tony Scott’s Domino opposite Keira Knightley.


A national media campaign will be run in association with media partners Independent Newspapers and FM104. Voting from the Republic of Ireland cost a maximum of 40c. Voting from Northern Ireland cost 50p plus standard network charges apply. One lucky voter will win a trip for two to Luxembourg (courtesy of lastminute.com), or a trip for two to a film premiere in London’s West End (courtesy of Visit Britain).
