WOMEN MAKE MOVIES NEW RELEASES

Maid in America by Anayansi Prado premiered on March 5th at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California.

Three years in the making, this tough- minded and emotional documentary follows three Latina women who work as housekeepers and nannies in Los Angeles, just a few of the 100,000 plus immigrants from Latin America working in that city today. With exceptional sensitivity, the film reveals these women's individual struggles, triumphs and changing roles, as they become an increasingly vital part of many American households.

THUNDER IN GUYANA ON INDEPENDENT LENS

Suzanne Wasserman's Thunder in Guyana enjoyed its broadcast premiere on the Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens in February and will run on various local PBS stations in March and April. Please check local listings. Packed with romance, politics and international intrigue, Thunder in Guyana is the remarkable tale of Chicago-born Janet Rosenberg, the filmmaker’s cousin, who married activist Cheddi Jagan in 1943, and set off for Guyana to lead a socialist revolution. Janet was eventually elected Guyana’s president in 1997, the first American-born woman to lead a nation.
