Nicole Kidman Honored by EIF's Women's Cancer Research Fund and Honorary Chairs Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks and Kate Capshaw & Steven Spielberg
BEVERLY HILLS, CA --- AT SAKS FIFTH AVENUE'S UNFORGETTABLE EVENING ON MARCH 1
Nicole Kidman will be honored by the Women's Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), with the event's honorary chairs Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks and Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, at Saks Fifth Avenue's Unforgettable Evening being held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire on Monday, March 1st, 2004, starting at 7:00 PM.
Saks Fifth Avenue's Unforgettable Evening was established to raise money for women's cancer research, and recognize one individual for his or her unwavering commitment to the cause. Ms. Kidman will receive the 2004 Courage Award on behalf of her work to further women's health issues. In 2003, she served as an EIF ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue's Key to the Cure Initiative, appearing in a nationwide public service announcement to raise funding and awareness for women's cancers. Ms. Kidman also serves as the first Board Chair of the Women's Health Fund at UCLA. Working on behalf of the David Geffen School of Medicine, her participation has been vital in raising funds for women's health programs and clinical research. Ms. Kidman also has a special connection to her work, her mother is a breast cancer survivor. Past recipients of this prestigious award include: Anne Douglas, Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sir Elton John, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, and Stella McCartney.
This year marks a new chapter for the event co-chairs, Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow, Marion Laurie, Kelly Meyer, and Jamie Tisch as they launch the Women's Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), a national initiative that supports innovative research, education and outreach directed at developing more effective approaches to the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all women's cancers. This initiative has been established through Hollywood's charitable arm, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, as a donor-advised fund with the purpose of raising funds to fast-track science and awareness to help millions of women at-risk of, or affected by cancer.
Additionally, WCRF has brought together some of the most renowned scientists in the world, including four Nobel Laureates, (see attached list) to advance leading-edge science in cancer prevention. WCRF's first collective project, the WCRF Biomarker Discovery Project, aims to identify and develop the most effective technology for molecular diagnostics. This project opens an unprecedented opportunity to develop a new science of diagnostics, which could largely eliminate cancer as a cause of death by early detection and localization for surgical intervention.
Money raised from Saks Fifth Avenue's Unforgettable Evening will support scientists who are part of the WCRF Biomarker Discovery Project. The event will also support research being conducted at medical institutes in the Los Angeles area. Local WCRF beneficiaries include continued support of Cedars-Sinai Research for Women's Cancers in addition to UCLA and USC-Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
As the philanthropic nucleus of the entertainment industry, EIF has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars - and provided countless volunteer hours - to support charitable initiatives addressing some of the most critical issues facing society today.
