Academy's "Monday Nights with Oscar®" Screening Series Presents "Primary" and "All the King's Men"
New York, NY - The Motion Picture Academy's series "Monday Nights with Oscar" lays the groundwork for the upcoming political season with a pair of classic movies on political subjects, the 1960 documentary "Primary," followed by the 1949 Best Picture winner "All the King's Men." The double feature screens at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 12.
Both films will be presented in the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in Manhattan.
Documentary filmmaker and professor Thom Powers will moderate a panel discussion with Robert Drew, the filmmaker behind "Primary." Fellow filmmakers Richard Leacock, D.A. Pennebaker and Albert Maysles, who worked as cameramen on the documentary, also will participate in the discussion.
"Primary," which recently was preserved by the Academy Film Archive, chronicles the Democratic Presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy, at the time a young senator from
Massachusetts. The film was the brainchild of Drew, who came up with the idea of having a small camera and sync sound recorder live with Kennedy day and night for nearly a week during the climax of his run against Hubert Humphrey in the primaries.
The film was the first project in the development of American Cinema Vérité and became a template for the groundbreaking films Drew would later shoot in the Kennedy White House.
"All the King's Men" starred Broderick Crawford as politician Willie Stark, who becomes corrupt on his rise to the top of the political tree. The performance won Crawford the Oscar for Best Actor of 1949.
The film also starred Mercedes McCambridge, who won the Oscar for her supporting performance of Sadie Burke. Additional nominations included Actor in a Supporting Role (John Ireland), Directing, Film Editing and Writing (Screenplay).
This print of "All the King's Men" is from the Academy Film Archive collection and is the result of a collaborative restoration that took place in 2000 by the Academy and Sony Entertainment.
The next offering in the "Monday Nights with Oscar" series will take place on Monday, February 23, featuring "Carmen Jones" with special guests Harry Belafonte and Robert Altman scheduled to participate. A special "Saturday Afternoon with Oscar" on Saturday, February 21, will feature the first-ever public screenings in New York of Live Action and Animated Short Films nominated for the 76th Academy Awards®, and will be hosted by Robert Osborne. The Oscar nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 a.m. PST.
Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid I.D. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling 888-778-7575.
