Monterey County Film Commission Screenplay Competition Winner Optioned
Baxter Taylor of New York, N.Y., one of the top three winners in last year’s Monterey Screenplay Competition, has had his screenplay, Tough Luck, optioned by Dror Soref, an award-winning writer/director and CEO with Skyline Pictures in Los Angeles. Soref is one of the participating Hollywood-based producers in the 2005 Monterey Screenplay Competition who agreed to read the top finalists’ scripts and meet with the winners. He was impressed with the caliber of Taylor’s work.
“Tough Luck is a very pleasant surprise,” Soref said. “It’s funny and engaging—a winning combination for commercial entertainment. I congratulate the Monterey County Film Commission on the quality of their contest-winning scripts.”
This is the first screenplay Taylor has entered in a screenwriting competition, and the first one he has optioned.
“Being one of the winners of the Monterey Screenplay Competition has given me some solid industry contacts and a big boost to my confidence as a writer,” Taylor said. “I can’t say enough good things about this competition.”
The Monterey Screenplay Competition is a smaller, premier competition that offers meetings with film industry agents and producers as a prize, along with cash and a special bonus for scripts using Monterey County locations or written by county residents. The contest is sponsored by the non-profit Monterey County Film Commission, which has Clint Eastwood as honorary chairperson.
This is the 11th year for the competition, which is open to all genres. Early deadline to enter is Feb. 28; final deadline March 31.
