THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Arts & Entertainment

REVIEW 04/04/02 - ‘Out of the Black’ (U.S.)

Everybody in a small mining town has a dark secret regarding events of 13 years ago, when 10-year-old Cole's father died in a mysterious mine incident and Cole shot his mother (Sally Kirkland), who is now confined to a wheelchair.

The death of a local big-shot and a pretty girl arriving in town yank the skeletons out of the closets.

Despite a melodramatic finale, this small film has its pluses: believable characters, good acting by a mostly recognizable cast -- including Dee Wallace Stone, Jack Conley, Sally Struthers and Michael J. Pollard -- and a pretty interesting mystery. There are some plotting annoyances, but the film is professionally produced, directed and edited. 107 min.

Grade: B

-- Louis B. Parks, THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE
