I knew I wanted to be a screenwriter........
When I saw the movie Taxi Driver.
I know I've succeeded........
When I sell a screenplay that becomes a good,
though not necessarily popular, film.
My inspiration to write DRINKING IN CHURCH.......
I loved the idea of writing a comedy
about people of various faiths and placing them in a church—and involved in a
crime.

FilmMakers
Magazine:
What inspired you to write?
Kieran Angelini: When I was 12 I read the plays of George
Bernard Shaw and Eugene O’Neill, and the novels of Mark Twain. There
have been many more writers who’ve I admired since then, but they were
the initial inspirations for me.
FilmMakers Magazine: What did you do to prepare yourself to write your first script?
Kieran Angelini: I read a lot of other scripts to see how it
was done. Then watched the movie with the script in my lap. It’s
arduous but well worth it.
FilmMakers Magazine: Is this your first script and how long did it take you to complete?
Kieran Angelini: This is my third script. It took about three
months to complete.
FilmMakers Magazine: Do you have a set routine, place and time management for writing?
Kieran Angelini:
I generally write at night. When it’s quiet. And I can pace and mumble
to myself without disturbing anyone.
FilmMakers Magazine: Do you believe screenplay contests are important for aspiring
screenwriters and why?
Kieran Angelini: Yes. They can help you get noticed by the
industry.
FilmMakers Magazine: What influenced you to enter the
FilmMakers International Screenwriting Awards?
Kieran Angelini: I read about it on the Internet.
FilmMakers Magazine: What script would you urge aspiring writers to read and why?
Kieran Angelini: Election, by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor.
It’s just so well written and visually interesting, with great
characters, a great story, and, curiously, a protagonist and
antagonist who have very few scenes together. It also makes great use
of voiceover with numerous characters, which is difficult to do well.
FilmMakers Magazine: Beside screenwriting what are you passionate about and why?
Kieran Angelini: My wife. And traveling to France.
FilmMakers Magazine: Who is your favorite Screenwriter
and Why?
Kieran Angelini: Billy Wilder. He could do it all: comedy,
drama. And do it great.
FilmMakers Magazine: Name the director you would love to work with and why?
Kieran Angelini:
Martin Scorsese. I like his movies,
why else?
FilmMakers
Magazine: Name the actor you would love to work with and why?
Kieran Angelini: Robert DeNiro. Because he works with Scorsese.
FilmMakers Magazine: Any tips and things learned along the way to pass on to others?
Kieran Angelini: Keep working. Don’t get discouraged. (Although
you will.)
FilmMakers Magazine: What's next for you?
Kieran Angelini: I’m working on two new plays. And thinking
about a new screenplay.
FilmMakers Magazine: Where will you be five years from now?
Kieran Angelini: Antibes in the south of France?! |
